Revitalising the film photography scene in Johor

A NEW contemporary film lab in Johor is set to open its doors on April 24, aiming to be the go-to for film photographers and enthusiasts in providing all their analog film needs.

With a mission to rejuvenate the film photography trend in Johor and even the country as a whole, The Duckroom hopes to become a pillar to support the small yet still growing film photography community in Malaysia.

The services at The Duckroom ranges from film developing, film scanning, darkroom printing, framing, and archiving.

Besides providing support for the more experienced film photographers, it also aims to lower the steep learning curve for the newer and the inexperienced through various workshops related to film photography and photography as a whole.

“Film photography seems odd to many people, but there is a certain charm that you can’t seem to get from the other forms of photography,” said The Duckroom creative producer Brendon Leong.

“This is not just place for film photographers, in fact all photographers are welcomed and is free to discuss the newest and the hottest happenings in the photography community,” he added.

During the launch on April 24, there will be an award-winning photo exhibition photographer Ernest Goh who used a Hasselblad XPAN camera and Kodak Tri-X and T-Max films to document the post-tsunami aftermath of Aceh, Indonesia – which was one of the hardest hit areas of the 2004 South Asian Tsunami disaster.

The photographs were documented over a period of four years with Ernest returning to Aceh every year to capture the journey of the recovery efforts and how the Acehnese, though sheer grit and strength recovered and restored the place they call home. – April 19, 2021
