“Right to smoke” not a good reason to continue puffing away. Smoking kills!

THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) is aware of comments made by certain groups on the right to choose and personal liberties that are guaranteed under the Federal Constitution with regards to the Government’s planned Generational End Game (GEG).

There is no doubt that everyone is equal under the law and all have freedom of choice under the Federal Constitution. The Courts at this point in time have nevertheless decided that the Federal Constitution does not guarantee the right of citizens to smoke as smoking is not considered a fundamental liberty.

We wish to remind the public that the Health Ministry’s highest priority is the health of the nation and that it would be irresponsible if the Government were to disregard or ignore the dangers of tobacco smoking, e-cigarettes and vaping products to the health of the population.

We hope these groups will see the bigger picture and give their full support for GEG as all will stand to benefit in the long term.

We know there is overwhelming evidence on the dangers of cigarette smoking and many emerging studies on the serious health issues associated with the use of e-cigarettes and vaping.

E-cigarette use or vaping has been linked to lung, heart, brain and gum illnesses. Many are unaware that the vape oils itself consist of many chemicals and metals that may be harmful to the lungs.

Excessive e-cigarette use can cause coughing, breathing difficulties, chest pain, nausea, fatigue and in some cases these health conditions may require hospitalisation.

EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury) is already a recognised medical diagnosis with clinical practice guidelines for its treatment.

There is a need to prevent these chronic health issues. It is estimated that 20,000 Malaysians die from smoking-related complications annually. It was reported that the Government is estimated to suffer RM273 bil in losses due to premature deaths from smoking-related complications if nothing is done to phase out the habit among people in the country.

The country stands to benefit more from GEG as we will save both lives and money.

The MMA once again states its unwavering support for GEG and any policy supportive of health. We urge all MPs to likewise prioritise the health of the population by giving their full support towards GEG. – July 28, 2022
