“CAN wipe first but ultimately wash with WATER!”
It is thus non-negotiable when it comes to matters of personal hygiene as highlighted by Threader @mohdhairies.
Grumbling that all too frequently he is faced with bidet-less toilets, this non-plussed Muslim was of the opinion that this should NOT be the case in a “Muslim country where Malays are the majority”.
Moreover, Islam is recognised as Malaysia’s official religion yet many public facilities in airports and shopping malls lack this basic amenity, he huffed.
“Are Malaysians expected to arm themselves with portable bidets when they need relieve themselves in a shopping mall washroom?” fumed the self-proclaimed feline lover and avid shopper in a recent post that has amassed 8.1K likes, 334 comments, 1K reposts and 21 shares.
Labelling this scenario “nonsense”, he urged that this unhygienic practice SHOULD NOT BE normalised.
“Yes, Islam is the official religion but Malaysia is not a Muslim country”. Correcting the poster’s misconception nevertheless, one truth seeker agreed wholeheartedly that bidets are a must, stating he “often holds back the urge to do a number two in the absence of one”.
Some hygiene-conscious non-Muslims quite rightly pointed out what many others are thinking – this isn’t limited to Muslims alone. “Non-Muslims can’t live without bidet in toilets, too,” screamed one commenter with another hilariously wondered “how to wash one’s Nutella without a bidet”.
Another concerned observer urged young folks to teach their elders how to adapt to modern toilets, recounting her own father wetting his clothes when using a bidet-less toilet at an airport (though it is NOT clear if this commenter was referring to a toilet without a bidet per se or one that has been fitted with modern in-seat bidets).
A frequent shopper also noticed at a mall that only certain stalls in the toilet were fitted with bidets. “Were they being stingy with fitting bidets?”
This sentiment was echoed by another commenter who expressed surprise that even supposedly premium shopping destinations such as Pavillion seemed to ration bidets in its washrooms.
However, it was pointed out that the toilets at KLIA are fitted with in-seat bidets. It was further clarified that in France, bidet is merely s separate toilet accessory, ie a tap or hose attached to the side of toilet wall for the benefit of the janitors, hence are not bidets as per the understanding of Malaysians.
It was also highlighted that aside from bidets, perhaps education material on proper toilet etiquette in the form of posters and infomercials be placed inside washrooms. This would avoid disgustingly wet and unclean toilets where bidets are attached.
Interestingly, one netizen asked the poster to take a chill pill by pointing out that bidets were non-existent during the Holy Prophet’s time.
By virtue of their cultural upbringing, it is quite unanimous that washing post-big business with WATER is a must for most Malaysians and Southeast Asians – Muslims and non-Muslims regardless. Not just wipe and go.
However, as quite rightly pointed out by quite a few unimpressed commenters, this has nothing to do with religion. It is a hygiene issue, full stop.
It would appear enough netizens can see beyond the ruse of turning a post about bidets into an issue dripping with 3R (race, religion and royalty) connotations. – Aug 6, 2026
