Rivals pounce on defensive Lotus’s with swift campaigns to celebrate pregnant mothers

Letter to the Editor

“IN the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity,” proclaimed German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein.

Well, as hypermarket and supermarket chain Lotus’s Malaysia went on the defensive by appealing to the Malaysian public not to criticise its staff over their mishandling of a pregnant shopper wrongly accused of shoplifting, the opportunity has been pounced upon by industry rivals.

I had in a previous missive to this portal’s editor suggested that it may be in Lotus’s Malaysia’s interest to launch a charm offensive aimed at expecting mummies.

Instead, that opportunity has been pounced upon by its rivals. There were sarcastic jabs aimed at Lotus’s Malaysia as exemplified by Mydin Malaysia’s loud proclamation that pregnant women need NOT come armed with their “pink books” when shopping at its stores.

Throwing down the gauntlet, Mydin Malaysia followed that up with freebie vouchers for the first 500 expectant mothers to arrive at selected outlets on July 15.

Taking a more personal touch, AEON Retail Malaysia reached out to the aggrieved husband with a message of support, accompanied by a shopping trip with complimentary vouchers for baby products.

Big loss

When many ordinary Malaysians are grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, such ploys are an effective way to get customers to switch their shopping patterns in the cut-throat fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry.

As for Lotus’s Malaysia themselves, they seem more interested in damage limitation rather than actually trying to improve matters.

This much is apparent in postings shared by the aggrieved spouse on Threads, highlighting the lack of transparency and empathy by Lotus’s less-than-delicate handling of the matter.

This included the lodging of a police report over the alleged harassment of his 38-week-old pregnant wife.

To say that he is unimpressed is understating the matter with the threat of legal action seemingly imminent.

Few things to note about this unfortunate episode.

Firstly, transparency matters and there is even now a movement to boycott Lotus’s Malaysia because of its mishandling of this matter.

There is a clear erosion of public trust and goodwill. The days of sweeping a matter under the carpet with an “internal investigation on-going” statement just doesn’t cut it anymore with a social media-savvy public.

Secondly, kudos to Lotus’s Malaysia’s rivals for acting swiftly by offering vouchers to expecting mothers. Yes, it may be a marketing strategy but one that has at least benefitted scores of Malaysians with some freebies.

Thirdly, FMCG retail is a cutthroat industry as exemplified by the ever-changing landscape of hypermarket brands. Lotus’s Malaysia cannot let this incident define its public image. Better crisis management is required before its spirals completely out of control.

Now, last but not least important – as highlighted in many a meme and online gag – it was suggested that beer-bellied shoppers, too, may want to declare their “innocence” in advance that their protruding guts hid no contraband, only unwanted calories. – July 17, 2026
