RM1 for air conditioning at nasi lemak restaurant: A step too far?

BESIDES the food and drinks, what else can a restaurant charge their customer? For Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kampung Baru, it is a ludicrous RM1 to enjoy the air conditioning in the dining area.

Netizens were enraged when a post on X by MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL highlighted this, stating that the culture of charging for everything should be stopped.

Quite a number of netizens have come forward to voice either their bad experience with the restaurant or to compare it with other eateries that do not charge for air conditioning.

“I have eaten there once. After that I never returned since the taste was just normal. The RM2 nasi lemak at the stall by the side of the road was tastier,” said netizen Firdaus Zainal.

TilamSabut, however, supported the action of the restaurant saying that people have been doing this for a long time.

“If you don’t want to pay, just eat outside. What is the problem? The bill for air conditioning is expensive you know,” said TilamSabut, adding that shops that charge for air conditioning have two sections for their dining area, one with air conditioning and another without.

“It’s not like they force you to sit in the air cond room,” said Tilam Sabut.

Netizen Galileo Galilei described the condition at Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kampung Baru, stating that the tables outside were usually full and that customers had to wait.

“It isn’t delicious but strangely, many people go there. I am also weird that I usually go there to eat, maybe because it is near to Opis so I was looking for a place to hang out,” said Galileo Galilei.

“How dare he charge our king RM1 although the owner of the shop is Indonesian,” said 𝕏-₮ⱤłǤǤɆⱤ  ₩₳Ɽ₦ł₦Ǥ.

Netizen Ashraf.M added that it was strange that the Malay people still frequent the shop.

“Isn’t it that the Malay people prioritise cleanliness? Google review has stated that the food had fly eggs, complete with photos too. That means the shop is dirty. Still want to eat there?” said Ashraf.M.

On another note, Nasi Lemak Wanjo Kampung Baru could have avoided this disaster if a simple public relation measure was applied.

Perhaps the RM1 charge for air conditioning need not be illustrated but added together to the total cost to render it obscure.

If the culture for charging is to continue, we wonder what is next for Malaysian diners. Charges for the comfy chair perhaps? —Nov 11, 2024
