THE proposed development of a shipyard in Tg Bruas, Melaka, costing more than RM2 bil came under fire from Twitter users. They have many questions and some are joking about the fate of the littoral combat ship (LCS) in the process.
Besides being touted as a project that will create over 3,000 job opportunities for locals, the state government will provide support to make Melaka an international maritime industry hub.
With approximately 90,000 ships passing through Melaka waters each year, the shipyard’s development is expected to enhance Melaka’s status as a maritime centre and attract further maritime activities, especially in the Tg Bruas Port area.
Hence, Twitter user @jacobt_jr said:
Nak bina shipyard boleh je. Yg lebih penting perlu ada business plan bagaimana nak bersaing dgn Singapura yg dah buat bisnes shipyard jauh lebih lama & boleh menarik tenaga mahir dgn gaji yg lumayan.

In English, the user is saying, “If you want to build a shipyard, you can. More importantly, there needs to be a business plan on how to compete with Singapore, which has been in the shipyard business for much longer and can attract skilled workers with decent wages.”
However, user @khuen0625 asked:
Will the cost balloon & create the expected results or maybe like Cyberjaya? Initial expected cost was 2.5b, upon completion, shot up to 7.5b, KLCC, MRTs?

And this user also questions the utility of building another shipyard.
User @Ramses333888 added:
Does he not know we already have 6-7 big shipyards in Malaysia that r not doing anything much. Plus globally shipyards are shrinking cause of overcapacity? Do they even know anything about the world ???

Moreover, @zakixtrail said:
Business plan nampak cantik dah cuma jgn sakau menyakau udah. Byk juga shipyard tepi laut selat melaka yang jahanam. Contoh yg paling dekat shipyard apa ka nama yg buat LCS halimunan tu.

“The business plan looks beautiful, don’t worry about it. There are also many shipyards by the sea in the Straits of Melaka, which are hellish. The closest example is the shipyard, what is the name of the invisible LCS?” — April 16, 2023
