Malaysians eligible for the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy will soon be able to rely on their Touch ‘n Go (TnG) e-wallet if they forget their MyKad at the pump.
According to The Star, petrol station workers briefed on the system were told the e-wallet will feature a special “Budi Madani RON95” icon that automatically deducts the subsidised amount once updates to the app are released.
MyKad readers remain central to the new mechanism, with customers required to verify eligibility before purchasing subsidised fuel.
For card payments, users will need to tap or insert their debit or credit card and loyalty card before inserting their MyKad. Without a loyalty card, only a two-step process with payment and MyKad is required.
The system will also track monthly quotas, with each eligible motorist reportedly entitled to around 100 litres of subsidised RON95.
Once the quota is used, customers will pay the full market price. A demonstration video circulating on X this week showed how MyKad readers display eligibility status and remaining quota.
Petrol dealers say the rollout is set for the end of September, with staff training under way. MyKad holders will also need to be physically present for visual verification to prevent proxy purchases.
The Finance Ministry has previously said that alongside MyKad, mechanisms such as e-wallets and oil company apps are under consideration.
Apps like Setel, which already use e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification, could eventually integrate eligibility checks and quota tracking into their platforms.—Sept 21, 2025
