A car bomb killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in southern Moscow, investigators have said. Sarvarov was head of the Russian general staff’s operational training directorate.
The explosive device detonated under his vehicle in a parking area early on Monday. He later died in hospital from his injuries, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.
A criminal investigation has been launched, with several motives being considered. One line of inquiry includes possible involvement by Ukrainian intelligence services.
The killing follows a series of high-profile attacks inside Russia since the war in Ukraine began.—Dec 23, 2025
