A 56-YEAR-OLD politician Phillip Among was sentenced to eight months in jail and fined RM5,000 (in default four months’ jail) by a Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday (Dec 18) for molesting an 18-year-old girl in 2021.
Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus found Phillip guilty under Section 354 of the Penal Code after ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He described the defence as a bare denial and afterthought that failed to raise doubt, while the victim’s testimony remained firm despite minor discrepancies.
The offence occurred in the living room of a capsule hotel on April 17, 2021. The prosecution called 10 witnesses; Phillip was the sole defence witness.
Defence counsel sought a non-custodial sentence, citing Phillip as a first-time offender. The prosecution pushed for three years’ imprisonment, arguing he showed no remorse and attempted to discredit the victim.
The court granted a stay of execution pending appeal to the High Court, maintaining bail with an additional RM5,000 and conditions including passport surrender. — Dec 20, 2025
