Sabah’s fish fry hatchery development underway

SANDAKAN: The Sabah Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry’s plan to develop fish fry hatcheries in the state is underway.

Its minister, Datuk Junz Wong said the development is vital to enable more Sabahans to venture into the aquaculture sector.

Wong, who visited a newly revived 13-acre fish fry hatchery here over the Chinese New Year holiday, said the hatchery currently produces four types of marine fish fries, including red snappers and rock cod grouper.

“We will then use the fish fries for Sabah government programmes, so, even Sabahans with zero experience in the aquaculture industry, but are interested to venture into it, can soon be part of this industry,” he said in a statement today.

The visit to the fish fry hatchery with the Sabah Fishery and Fishermen Development Corporation or Ko-Nelayan was led by the hatchery’s owner Jacky Ho.

Wong said the initiative was one of the many important initiatives stipulated in the Sabah Agriculture Blueprint 2021-2030.

He said the setting up of such hatcheries in accordance with the blueprint would result in sufficient supplies of fish fries for aquaculture purposes.

“This is one of the important reforms in my ministry which allows Sabahans an opportunity to make extra income. We can also boost Sabah’s economy and aquaculture sector in a sustainable way,” he said, adding that more land will be used for the expansion of the programme. – Jan 29, 2020, Bernama
