Sanusi charged with two counts of sedition

DATUK Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor has pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court in Selayang, Selangor today (July 18) to a charge of making a statement alleged to be seditious against Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

For the first charge, the caretaker Kedah menteri besar claimed trial before judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin to uttering seditious words regarding the appointment of Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari during a political talk last week.

Sanusi, 48, was alleged to have committed the act which had a seditious tendency by uttering words that have a tendency to raise discontent or disaffection among the subjects of a ruler.

Sanusi, who is also the Perikatan Nasional election director, also pleaded guilty in a separate court before judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh to a charge of uttering seditious words over the establishment of the unity government during a political talk last week.

For this charge, he was alleged to have committed acts that have a seditious tendency by uttering words that have a tendency to raise discontent or disaffection among the subjects of a ruler.

Both charges are framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948 and punishable under Section 4(1) of the same law, which provides a maximum fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to three years or both if convicted.

According to news reports, both judges had imposed a gag order on Sanusi to refrain him from commenting on the case. July 18, 2023
