Sanusi is now willing to sell water to Penang

KEDAH Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor said his government is now ready to sell clean water to Penang which will help the state overcome its water woes.

According to him, Kedah has surplus clean water at the Lubuk Buntar Water Treatment Plant (LRA) and is ready to channel it to the state if the Penang state government wants to buy it.

He added that this will help resolve a long-standing issue that has plagued the people of Nibong Tebal for a long time, especially in the Sungai Bakap area.

“It’s not that I don’t have clean water…I have it, if you want to buy it, we can sell it.

“In good faith, I am ready with the condition of having to buy, not take ‘free’ like in Sungai Muda,” he said at the Launching Ceremony of the By-Election Machinery (PRK) of Perikatan Nasional (PN) N20 Sungai Bakap, on Saturday (June 8).

Sanusi also stated that Penang, as a developed state that has a special ‘The Greater Penang’ plan, should not be faced with water problems.

He said it was a shame when the Penang government made high profits by selling water supply in industrial areas but failed to add infrastructure facilities to solve the water supply problems in Nibong Tebal.

Commenting further, Sanusi who is also the PAS elections director said that Penang which sucks twice as much water as Kedah in Sungai Muda should have a sufficient water supply.

“It shouldn’t be a problem because this state is a small state, short pipes, easy to maintain.

In 2021, Kedah’s government, led by Sanusi, demanded that Penang pay for raw water.

Sanusi reiterated that even with federal involvement, Penang should bear the cost of raw water.

In October 2023, the water issues between the two states escalated with threats of court interventions after the Kedah MB was quoted as saying he would seek legal action to compel Penang to pay for the raw water it extracts from Sg Muda.
