Sarawak premier shoots down Nanta’s currency proposal

SARAWAK premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg shot down the suggestion that the state will resort to using its currency, a statement made by Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Sarawak will not use its currency and will continue using the Ringgit, said Abang Johari. He also added that the issue of using one’s own currency envisioned by Nanta was just a personal opinion.“I don’t know, that’s just Nanta’s personal opinion. We already have the Malaysian currency, so we have to follow (use the Malaysian currency),” he said to the media after officiating the 2023 National Anti-Scam Tour at the Sarawak Level at the Borneo Cultural Museum Auditorium today.Yesterday (Sept 1), Nanta stated that Sarawak might want to explore the idea of introducing their own independent currency due to the unpredictable economic landscape in the country. The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general claimed that he is not a traitor to the country for vocalising this idea but this was something that could be considered if the less favourable economy persists.“If Sarawak economy is so good, while the national economy is not well, perhaps Sarawak will have our own currency,” he said during a special podcast today in collaboration with Bual Studios and Reka Sounds for Merdeka and Malaysia Day titled “From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 Years”.“I hope people are not saying that I’m a traitor to the country, but I’m talking seriously. If we are so good in developing our economy, by calculation, our economy should be strong.”The Kapit MP hinted at this in a podcast titled ‘From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 years’ yesterday. – Sept 2, 2023
