TWO tremors struck Johor on Sunday, hours apart, with the first a 4.1-magnitude quake in Segamat at 6.13am, followed by a 2.8-magnitude tremor near Kluang around 9am.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed the quakes were felt in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and southern Pahang but stressed there was no tsunami threat.
The first quake jolted residents who described loud bangs and tremors. The quake’s epicentre was five kilometres west of Segamat, felt across Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and southern Pahang.
Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said Segamat District Officer Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi confirmed no casualties or property damage from the quake.
“I have been in contact with Tuan Haji Mohd Ezzuddin bin Sanusi, the District Officer of Segamat, and have been informed that, as of now, there are no reports of casualties or property damage,” he said in a post on platform X this morning.
“The Johor State Government is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the relevant agencies,” he added.
While minor damage was reported at a surau in Kampung Sanglang, authorities confirmed no injuries or major incidents. Police and fire departments in Johor and Pahang received no official reports but remain on alert. MetMalaysia assured there is no tsunami threat and monitoring continues.
The Johor Civil Defence Force reported minor damages in Segamat but no casualties. Patrols and inspections were launched with police, fire, and local authorities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. —Aug 24, 2025
