Second UMNO minister quits Cabinet post, cites obedience to party as reason

UMNO member Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad has announced her resignation from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s Cabinet.

This was in line with her party’s decision to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional Government, which she must obey as the Wanita Umno chief, she said in a statement today (Aug 6).

“I resign as the minister of higher education, a Cabinet member of the federal administration, with immediate effect.

“The party’s decision will be implemented when Parliament convenes,” she added.

Noraini is the second Umno leader to resign this week, after Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah quitted as the energy and natural resources minister on Tuesday (Aug 3).

Her announcement also came following Umno vice president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s press conference earlier this morning when he led a group of Barisan Nasional lawmakers to pledge support for the Muhyiddin administration.

Earlier this week, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that there is an adequate number of statutory declarations signed by Umno MPs who have retracted their support for Muhyiddin as prime minister.

Zahid had also urged his party’s leaders in the Cabinet to resign their posts as a result of Umno’s decision. – Aug 6, 2021
