MALAYSIA’S leading higher education institution SEGi University & Colleges achieved another landmark milestone with the launching of SEGi MetaCampus on July 1, 2022.
SEGi MetaCampus is not only the sixth campus for SEGi but is also the country’s first university in the metaverse.
Metaverse refers to “a shared, realistic, and immersive computer simulation of the real world or other possible worlds, in which people participate as digital avatars”.
It is often described as the next evolution of the internet, promising new levels of social connectedness, mobility, and collaboration in a virtual world. The internet, as we know it, is where we browse, but people can “live” in the metaverse.
“SEGi is the first university in Malaysia to launch such a unique campus, which will radically change the way students learn, interact and connect,” said SEGi University & Colleges managing director Stella Lau.
According to Lau, the world has moved on to the current generation of digital natives who prefer integrating technology into their learning.
“Traditional brick-and-mortar institutions may still be relevant, but we cannot deny the fact that the landscape of higher education is shifting. SEGi is proud to be among the first in the world to lead the revolution of the learning experience, yet again,” she said.
Lau added that the launch of SEGi MetaCampus is a testament to its commitment and dedication to enhancing students’ learning experience, subsequently transforming the online and hybrid education landscape in Malaysia.
“SEGi has always believed in breaking the boundaries and providing the best academic offerings for students. As we know it, the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has greatly impacted the way we live and learn, and hybrid education is the way forward for the new normal,” she explained.
“SEGi MetaCampus provides students with an alternative way to savour university life to the fullest, without the need to be physically present on campus.”
Developed by SEGi University & Colleges with its technology partner Magnus Games Studio, SEGi MetaCampus is a self-sustainable ecosystem in the metaverse, which has specialised applications for learning and teaching.
The virtual university is accessible via the SoCrwd application available on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
Users need to register an account and create a personalised avatar to start their journey in the metaverse.
SEGi MetaCampus integrates links between multiple 3D universes like 100 lecture halls, 300 lecture rooms, 30 meeting rooms, six libraries, 50 retail shops, 30 student hangouts and six concert halls.
Additionally, students can limitlessly conduct their studies via integrated access to SEGi’s existing signature online learning management, make easy payment via payment gateways and have ad hoc discussions in various e-meeting rooms.
