SEGi offers one-of-a-kind MBBS experience

THERE is so much to medicine than just a science – it is complex, challenging and yet intriguing and unique.

The world of medicine is vast, with diverse fields of study to specialize in for the betterment of the practitioner and the community.

In its 45 years of excellence, SEGi University & Colleges has been dedicated to producing lifelong learners, and medicine is one of the many higher education programmes offered across its five campuses to bring up “The Best In You, Made Possible”.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is one of SEGi’s most in-demand undergraduate programmes developed especially for students who believe in making a difference in the lives of others through the delivery of better healthcare.

The five-year MBBS programme is divided into two phases yet integrated with both theoretical study and clinical training, thus providing students with diverse learning opportunities in various medical settings.

“By combining patient-centred, science-driven and team-based learning experience into one curriculum, our students will get early and extensive clinical exposure right from the beginning of their study,” said Prof Dr Mohamad Raili bin Suhaili, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, SEGi University.

Raili then explained that upon completing Phase 1 (Medical Sciences), the MBBS students will continue their study at SEGi Sibu Clinical Campus.

“Our clinical campus in Sibu is a true signature of SEGi. Since 2014, we are privileged to be the only institution with exclusive access to Sibu Hospital. What better way for students to put their knowledge into practice in an actual healthcare setting, the second largest hospital in Sarawak, for the final three years of their study,” he elaborated.

MBBS students at SEGi Sibu Clinical Campus are also exposed to in-field training and community activities, namely through Palliative Care Association Sibu and Agape Centre.

The students are also placed in various public care centres, government clinics and rural district hospitals with the objective that they are fully capable of providing medical care even in a limited set-up.

Raili also shared that in 2017, SEGi University has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Duke University, USA, in conjunction with the opening of the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) Clinical Research Laboratory.

The objective was to build capacity for surveillance and diagnosis of respiratory viruses.

“The SEGi-DUKE-CRC lab is not only pivotal in ensuring our continued contribution to the local and international medical realm, but it also served as a COVID-19 testing hub during the pandemic,” said Raili.

“With the approval of the Ministry of Health (MOH), we were able to process over 12,000 blood samples within the first three months.”

Further to this, the SEGi Health Care was registered as a Health Care Organisation Provider or Pusat Pemberian Vaksin Industri (PPVIN) in collaboration with University Technology Sarawak and local conglomerate PANSAR, where over 100,000 dosages have been administered.

Raili shared that “over 100 of SEGi’s students and faculty registered as volunteers in a bid to support the national agenda to combat the pandemic. It was also a good exercise to train our students on crisis preparedness and intervention whenever duty calls.”

The MBBS programme at SEGi University is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Malaysia Medical Council (MMC). Students are also eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE®) from the end of Year 1 onwards to prepare them to be globally competitive for a challenging career ahead.

SEGi is one of only 20 universities worldwide and one of only two Malaysian universities to achieve an overall QS 5 Stars Plus Rating for attaining QS 5 Stars rating in eight evaluations, among which is Specialist Criteria: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
