THE Selangor state government under the guidance of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has embarked on early and comprehensive preparations to confront the challenges posed by potential flooding.
The government has pledged to provide assistance to up to 5,000 victims in the event of displacement due to floods, highlighting a proactive approach to disaster management.
“The Smart Selangor Operation Centre will coordinate and monitor information to the people through cooperation with the Meteorology Department,” said Amirudin during a press conference at the Selangor Secretariat building in Shah Alam.
Moreover, Amirudin stressed the importance of swift action during crises. To expedite the relocation of residents and the delivery of vital supplies, the government plans to identify temporary shelters in flood-prone areas.

“So, in the event of a major flood disaster, it will not take us as long as it did in 2021 to move out residents or send in supplies for the victims. We are also working to upgrade facilities at flood shelters in terms of water supply and others,” the Selangor MB reassured.
In terms of flood mitigation and prevention, Amirudin highlighted the ongoing clean-up efforts undertaken by local councils. These efforts focus on ensuring clear irrigation and drainage systems in their respective areas, aiming to reduce the risk of flooding.
Besides, the state government announced key initiatives as part of its “100-day commitments” following the state election. These include the waiver of assessment tax for 426,656 low-cost and village houses in Selangor, representing a significant financial relief of RM29,415,672.50 for local councils.
Furthermore, 500 recipients of the Selangor agricultural incentive scheme will receive RM500 in cash assistance and RM500 worth of equipment or raw materials starting Oct 31. The Selangor Religious Affairs Department will also coordinate an increase in salaries for all mosque imams and officials commencing this month. – Oct 4, 2023
