SELANGOR Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not underestimate Perikatan Nasional (PN) efforts to conquer the state in the forthcoming state polls.
Amirudin’s statement came following reports that Selangor PN chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has been given the responsibility of winning the state election as a “gift” to the coalition.
However, Amirudin acknowledged that he will not underestimate PN’s efforts, although he was confident that the PH stronghold will remain impenetrable.
“That was their strategy but even with Azmin in the picture during the previous general election PH still won the majority of the parliamentary seats in Selangor,” said the Gombak MP at a press conference in Shah Alam today (June 19).
The Sungai Tua assemblyman was responding to the statement made by PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Saturday (June 17) who has placed the onus on Azmin to deliver victory at the coming state elections.
Muhyiddin also said it was Azmin’s responsibility as former menteri besar and the current Selangor PN chairman to ensure that the coalition wins at the elections.
Meanwhile, Amirudin has also expressed confidence that PH will maintain its two-thirds majority position in Selangor in the upcoming state polls.
When asked if the confidence was due to the cooperation with PH’s long-time political rivals BN in forming the unity government at the federal level, the PKR vice-president said it was due to the performance of the state government during the past five years.
“With the right strategy, it is possible for PH-BN to win more than 50 seats,” he said.
Earlier on, Sultan Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said the Selangor legislative assembly will be dissolved on Friday (June 23), paving the way for fresh elections as the state assembly’s term expires on Sunday (June 25).
Selangor is among three states under PH that will hold their polls soon, with the other two being Penang and Negri Sembilan, which have announced that they will dissolve their state assemblies on June 28 and 30, respectively. – June 19, 2023
