Though sensible, detractors mock Loke for mooting concurrent parliamentary, state polls for GE16

OPPOSITION-SLANT netizens have hurled brickbats at DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook even as he put forth a viable ad cost-effective proposal of resetting the 16th General Election’s (GE16) electoral clock for Parliament and peninsula state polls to be simultaneously held.

“Agreed. The rakyat also recommend that DAP be dissolved. Won a little but made lots of noises as if you’re always right,” chastised one commenter to an Astro Awani report of DAP airing the GE16 to be streamlined like in the previous national polls.

Another prayed for a “peaceful Malaysia without Anwar Ibrahim, PKR & DAP in the Parliament and the land of Malaysia” while others want DAP and its Pakatan Harapan (PH) allies “to be buried for good come GE16” or to even “return as opposition”.

Speaking to the media after the Seremban DAP annual general meeting (AGM) yesterday (Sept 21), Loke who is also the Transport Minister and Seremban MP nevertheless stressed that there were no official talks about such a proposal.

As it is, GE16 must be held by Feb 17, 2028. Recall that the advent of the Sheraton Move which toppled the then PH 1.0 government had resulted in a fractured Peninsular Malaysia’s election timeline with four different cycles created for state elections.

As a result, snap state elections being held in Melaka (November 2021) and Johor (March 2022) while six states – Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu – held their state polls in August 2023 or nine months apart from GE15 held in November 2022.

Only Perlis, Perak and Pahang had their state polls concurrently with GE15. If the timeline is to be reset, GE16 must be held before the next Malacca state election. The current state legislature’s term is set to expire in December 2026, meaning that polls will have to be held by February 2027 at the latest.

Continuing with their DAP/PH bashing, the detractors who may also include some disgruntled UMNO grassroot members even mooted ‘outrageous’ ideas such as “making it compulsory for voters holding ICs to be able to speak Malay before they enter the polling station” or even “sing my national anthem Negaraku or recite the Rukun Negara”.

On the other side of the divide, the pro-Madani faction as represented by some Malaysiakini subscribers warned of “the consequences of continuing to mock Loke” One commenter even envisages the following Cabinet line-up post GE16:

  1. Prime Minister XI: YB Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar
  2. DPM: Son in law of YB Hadi Awang
  3. Finance Minister: YB Hadi Awang
  4. Health Minister: YB Muhamad Sanusi
  5. Defence Minister: YB Tuan Ibrahim
  6. Information: YB Takiyuddin

“It’s easier than you think!” he teased. “First amendment to the Penal Code: Victims of statutory rape are punishable.”

Cautioned another:

“GE 16: Pakatan Harapan: 102 seats; PAS: 60 seats; Bersatu: 60 seats. This is enough for a PAS government. Goodbye to wearing shorts. Goodbye to women sports. Goodbye to foot reflexology.” – Sept 22, 2025
