“Serious allegation”: MP denies Wan Saiful’s claim over influence to support govt

GUA Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim has denied Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan’s allegation regarding influence to support the government, calling such remarks slander aimed at tarnishing his image as a politician.

NST reported that Mohd Azizi also challenged the Tasek Gelugor MP to provide evidence for all his allegations.

“I learned about this only after he issued the statement as when he spoke about it, I was outside the Parliament attending a briefing session,” he told the English daily.

“It really shocked me after hearing all the allegations against me and I would like to stress here that I have never invited or called him asking to meet the Prime Minister.

“But I remembered that I have met him and another man whom l could not recognised at a cafe in Kuala Lumpur this year.”

Mohd Azizi related that Wan Saiful had told him that he was approached by someone to get his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to Mohd Azizi he had also shown Wan Saiful the details and the agreement about what he will get for supporting the prime minister from his phone.

“I told him I will get the allocation similar like other MPs in the unity government. That’s all I have told me,” he clarified.

“So, for me, his statement today is baseless and aimed to slander me. If (his allegation) is true, he can provide the evidence such as voice recording or witnesses to support his claims.”

Mohd Azizi said he would discuss this issue with the Dewan Rakyat Speaker soon before taking the next course of action against Wan Saiful.

Earlier today, the former Bersatu information chief alleged that he had been lured by two MPs to influence his behaviour, including speeches to be delivered in Parliament.

Speaking in Parliament, Wan Saiful claimed that the two MPs were Mohd Azizi and Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi who had previously declared support for the Anwar-led unity government.

Wan Saiful went on to propose the establishment of a committee under Standing Order 80A to punish those who have committed contempt of the House under Sections 9(d) and 9(e) of the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952, or Act 347.

Standing Order 80A grants the Dewan Rakyat the authority to address cases of contempt as defined under Act 347.

Meanwhile, Sections 9(d) and 9(e) set out the actions and behaviour that may be considered contemptuous towards the authority, functions and privileges of Parliament.

Wan Saiful said he made the proposal based on a precedent set by the late Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh.

His proposal was seconded by Beluran MP Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee who went into detail about how a parliamentary special committee was set up to probe a scuffle between Karpal and several Selangor Umno Youth members in 2009.

However, deputy speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor suggested that Wan Saiful prepare and forward a motion to Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul for consideration. – March 21, 2024
