Shafie now adds to criticism of no action in Sabah corruption allegations

WARISAN president Shafie Apdal recently questioned why no one was arrested in the ongoing Sabah corruption scandal, despite videos allegedly showing Sabah assemblypersons discussing bribes.

“When I questioned (about 1MDB), I straightaway entered (lockup). I got remanded. For several weeks I slept on the floor and wore orange. In Muhyiddin’s case he wears a tie, Najib enters court wearing a coat, I wore orange and, what more, I slept on the floor. These videos with YBs came out, no orange clothes, nobody sleeping on the floor, what’s that about?” he said.

Shafie, who was once a vice-president of UMNO, was suspended in 2016 for criticising then-Prime Minister Najib Razak over 1MDB.

He later left UMNO to form Warisan, a Sabah-based party. In 2017, he was arrested by MACC over alleged misappropriation of RM1.5 bil in development funds, a move seen as politically motivated after Najib removed him from the cabinet.

At a Chap Goh Mei event in Tenom, Shafie also claimed that UMNO had expressed interest in cooperating with Warisan for the upcoming Sabah state election.

However, both Warisan and Sabah UMNO have denied reports of an electoral pact.

Some DAP leaders voice concerns over the government’s commitment to reform. Ramkarpal Singh has highlighted the need for a thorough investigation into the Sabah corruption scandal, arguing that the video evidence establishes a prima facie case.

His call for accountability aligns with DAP’s long-standing anti-corruption stance.

Meanwhile, on a different matter, DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has strongly criticised the arrest of Suaram Executive Director Sevan Doraisamy over a hunger strike protesting SOSMA detentions.

Lim’s remarks underscore frustration over PH’s failure to repeal draconian laws, a key promise of its reform agenda. —Feb 16, 2025
