Should Hannah’s hubby politely reject lucrative project simply because he’s a minister’s spouse?

“WHAT’s all this fuss about Hannah Yeoh’s husband getting a billion-dollar project without tender? Just because he’s the husband of a minister should not preclude him from getting big projects from the Selangor government?”

Such was the defence rendered by former de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to embattled Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh who found herself ‘under siege’ with accusation that her husband’s company won a pioneering transit system project from the Selangor state government through direct negotiations instead of an open tender process.

For the record, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd which is founded and helmed by the DAP Segambut MP’s husband Ramachandran Muniandy has been named as one of two companies selected for a new Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) system in the Klang Valley with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) having also given the nod.

“The Madani government (and that includes DAP) is all about transparency, open tender and accountability. There is no corruption and no abuse in the Madani outfit both at the state and federal. They don’t even take a salary,” tweeted the supposedly UMNO member with a Perikatan Nasional (PN) slant.

“So, when the system is corrupt-free, personal relationships do not taint the system at all. Hannah could not possibly influence the corrupt-free Rapid Land Transit Authority which found the idea/concept brilliant nor could she influence the corrupt-free MB (Menteri Besar) and DAP EXCO leaders in Selangor.”

With a tinge of sarcasm, Zaid reckoned that the public “will never know if the idea of the project is good or flawed or if it could be done by someone else just as well for a billion less but that’s another matter”.

“Returning to Ramachandran, you can’t expect him to go back home and say to Hannah: ‘Darling, I have been awarded this big project but I will reject it because I’m married to you.’ Hannah would probably think he is a nut!”

But Zaid’s defence was shot down by some netizens who perceived the award of the project as shrouded in “cronyism, nepotism and favouritism” – and that “there’s no two ways about it”. In so doing, they also drew analogies and brough up past cases as comparison – all of which are self-explanatory. – May 27, 2024
