Sisters earn whopping RM30,000 a month on spit gill mushroom harvest

STORIES of successful farmers reaping the bounties of the earth is no longer news to us. But the recent highlight about two young girls making a killing of RM30,000 per month on spit gill mushroom harvest may stop anyone in their tracks.

According to a post on X by Bernama which has since gained huge traction, the two siblings with undergraduate degrees had declined promising job offers to cultivate spit gill mushrooms.

Afizah Mat Sulaiman, 34, and her sister, Aisyah, 31, hailed from Jabi, and had been exploring mushroom cultivation since 2016.

Afizah explained that more than 90 percent of their spit gill mushrooms are sold online, with the remainder sold directly to local residents.

She said her interest in cultivating spit gill mushrooms began after she realised the high competition, particularly for marketing oyster mushrooms.

“Exposure through various media about cases of poisoning after consuming spit gill mushrooms collected from fallen rubber trees motivated us to grow spit gill mushrooms,” she said.

“We harvest between 15 kilograms (kg) and 28 kg of spit gill mushrooms per yield and cultivate them twice a month in 300 blocks,” she said, adding that she plans to open a restaurant and sell mushroom-based food.

More than just the money, a netizen who was undoubtedly inspired by them said it was more peaceful to live in the village with the freedom unlike all those traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur.

One netizen highlighted the lucrative prospect of growing split gill mushrooms. According to the netizen, a kg should command a price of about RM70, although he is unsure whether the price has risen now. He is unsurprised that the ladies could get RM30,000 a month.

R.Suthesan predicts that many people would soon join in the business of growing split gill mushrooms once this news goes viral.

With such generous earnings, R.Suthesan’s prediction has every reason to come true. On a more important note, the two ladies are earning much, much more than the average city dweller, besides enjoying a lower standard of living in the idyllic east coast state of Terengganu.

That being said, here is a tragic realisation for us all. What are we doing clumping together in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur when the humble, idyllic village life holds more treasures? – Aug 23, 2024
