Splendid “Reminiscing Jiangnan” ballet galore by Suzhou Ballet Theatre @ Encore Melaka

IN A remarkable fusion of Eastern and Western ballet, the Suzhou Ballet Theatre from China has recently presented three live performances of “Reminiscing Jiangnan: A Ballet Collection of Excellence” at the Encore Melaka Theatre.

Marking 50 years of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China, the event hosted by Encore Melaka took place from April 12 to 14.

Supported by the Malaysia National Department for Culture and Arts, the Han Culture Centre Malaysia, Asia Television and Asia Pacific Daily, it celebrates the cross-cultural bridge between Malaysia and China.

Some 50 top ballet dancers from the Suzhou Ballet theatre brought to life the lush landscapes and deep emotions of China’s Jiangnan region through the performances.

Previously, the Suzhou Ballet has brought this distinctive performance to countries such as Spain and Algeria for performances and exchanges. In addition, they also performed selected excerpts from the third act of the classical ballet “Swan Lake”, much to the delight and astonishment of the audience.

Yong Tai Bhd CEO and Encore Melaka founder Datuk Boo Kuang Loon highlighted the show’s global appeal and the theatre’s revival post-pandemic. He also spoke of the upgraded theatre facilities that elevate the viewing experience.

The VIP night saw an illustrious gathering which included Yong Tai’s executive director Datuk Beh Hang Kong, the group’s independent non-executive directors (INEDs) Datuk Kenny Ng Bee Ken and Anthony Ang Meng Huat as well as special adviser to Melaka Chief Minister (investment and China affairs) Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

Located near the Straits of Melaka, Encore Melaka is the first theatre in Southeast Asia to feature a 360-degree rotating auditorium and is equipped with cutting-edge audio and visual technology. The venue can accommodate up to 1,800 spectators per show.

The Suzhou Ballet Theatre which boasts a rich 17-year history has performed in 16 countries. The troupe has been receiving substantial artistic funding in China since 2014. – April 16, 2024
