Split emerges in PN as PAS boycotts Dominic Lau’s candidature in Bayan Lepas

GERAKAN president Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai was left stranded with the absence of PAS supporters to back him on nomination day at Bayan Lepas.

Questions are being asked about whether there is a split within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) that may impact the voting pattern in Penang where PAS is competing for 10 seats. PAS has stated that it will strive to win all 10 seats to help the PN coalition form a new government in the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-held state.

Two days ago, Lau pointed to “poor communication” as the reason for the call by the PAS division in Bayan Lepas to boycott the polls if he is nominated for the state seat.

“Whatever issues that we (PN Penang) have should be resolved internally and not through the media. We (Gerakan) will provide an explanation to PN Penang,” he said at a press conference on Thursday (July 27).

News portal Kosmo had earlier reported that the PAS division had threatened to give nomination day a miss if Lau was named as a candidate.

It appears that the campaigners from PAS kept to their word and apparently boycotted the nomination day at Bayan Lepas.

Furthermore, PAS has been contesting the seat since the 12th General Election. According to reports, voters were demanding a Malay candidate. – July 29, 2023
