TWO days ago, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad raised eyebrows when he said that Singapore would be a more developed country if UMNO was ruling the island-state.
He said this in response to PAS vice president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah who stated earlier that Singapore is a developed country because there is no UMNO there.
“UMNO can match the People’s Progressive Party (PAP) in Singapore. Besides, Malaysians who travel daily to Singapore are not only Johoreans but also those from PAS-ruled states like Kedah and Kelantan,” Malaysiakini reported him as saying.
However, netizens were amused by Hasni’s claims and took to social media to mock the UMNO leader for his statement.
Echoing Ian Babe’s sentiments, user Abdul Rashid MBE added:
Netizen Au retorted with a meme, saying that the Singaporean Parliament had to be temporarily suspended as their MPs could not stop themselves from laughing over Hasni’s statement.
It is to note that UMNO does have its offshoot in Singapore, which is called the Singapore Malays National Organisation (SMNO), just like the DAP which has its roots to the PAP before the Separation in 1965.
But unlike the DAP which has national clout, the SMNO and other parties have failed to make inroads since 1965 as the PAP-led Government retains its iron-grip on the island state until today.
On that note, user Sharon Dandelions reminded UMNO leaders that unlike Malaysia, Singapore is developed country on par with South Korea and Japan.
