Squeaky shoes a danger to children

GROWING up, it is normal for us children to wear those shoes that either go squeak when you walk or produce colourful lights and music. The innocence of childhood allows us to do and wear about anything without being shamed by society.

However, a post by Facebook page Public Health Malaysia warned that these endearingly squeaky shoes may not be as harmless as they seem.

They warned that such shoes have the ability to disrupt a child’s natural process since they are more focused towards the sound produced by their steps.

From a safety point of view, the noise also draws their attention away from the immediate surroundings. This may certainly be a point of concern if said child is attempting to cross a busy road filled with passing cars.

Further on, Public Health Malaysia said such shoes also change the way the children walk since they will want to move in a way that allows them to continue listening to the squeaks. Such behaviour may adversely affect their posture.

Most importantly, the sound produced can disturb the peace of others, especially people in public spaces such as the hospital, clinic or office.

Despite all the negative points being raised, the health page said such shoes do have some remote benefits such as giving the children some motivation to learn walking. Besides, the squeaks have a way of alerting parents that their child is moving about the house besides bringing happiness to the child.

Public Health Malaysia concluded by recommending the usage of squeaky shoes in the vicinity of one’s home under the supervision of the parents. It may not be suitable for daily wear or at public spaces.

The concerns raised by the Facebook health page are certainly pertinent ones, and they will be food for thought to parents. Who would have imagined such an innocent thing as a squeaky shoe posing a danger to children. If so, then what other seemingly safe items could become a threat to our little loved ones when analysed under the lens of experts? We can only imagine with dread. – Aug 6, 2024
