State polls: “PAS candidates must be free from major sins,” says spiritual leader

HAVING a good moral character and not being involved in major sins are among the requirements for PAS candidates contesting in the upcoming state polls.

PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin said the selection of the candidates will be done at the meeting of the Syura Ulama Council next week where each state constituency will present three candidates for the selection process.

According to Hashim, the PAS Syura Council will thoroughly evaluate each candidate before considering those who are actually qualified for the position.

“The main agenda of the Syura Council next week is vetting the candidates who will be contesting in the elections.

“The priority of the candidates who will be selected is not to be involved in major sins, not to continue to commit minor sins and to have morals,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia today (June 27).

At the same time, Hashim stated that it is up to the Syura Council to make the decision on whether newly-minted PAS member Tan Sri Annuar Musa will be given a chance to contest under PAS ticket.

Hashim pointed out that the former Ketereh MP competing as a PAS candidate in the next state elections is not a concern for him.

Last Thursday (June 22), it was reported that the seat negotiations between Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties for the six states that will be involved in the upcoming state elections had been finalised with the coalition competing in all 245 state assembly seats involving Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan and Terengganu.

PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said PAS will be contesting in 126 seats, with Bersatu contesting 83 and Gerakan 36.

The Pagoh MP additionally said that there are also a number of ‘non-incumbent seats’ that PN will be contesting.

“Bersatu is contesting 64 seats, PAS 50 and Gerakan 36,” said Muhyiddin. – June 27, 2023
