Steady growth for Alibaba’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival

ALIBABA Group Holding Limited has successfully concluded its 13th annual 11.11 Global Shopping Festival which generated RMB540.3 bil (US$84.54 bil) in gross merchandise volume (GMV) during the 11-day campaign.

According to Alibaba Group vice president Yang Guang, they delivered steady and quality growth that is a reflection of the dynamic Chinese consumption economy during the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival.

Alibaba Group had also leveraged the power of 11.11 as a platform to fulfil social responsibility.

“A record 290,000 brands participated in the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival this year, of which 65% are small and medium-sized businesses, manufacturers from industrial belts and new brands,” noted Yang.

Agricultural belts in less developed regions enjoyed strong sales, with GMV of agricultural products from these regions growing 20% year-over-year.”

This year’s festival marks a meaningful milestone for the group in relation to their commitment to building a sustainable future.

Zhangbei County data centre played a major role in supporting Alibaba’s e-commerce businesses by reducing more than 26,000 tons of carbon emission.

Highlights from this year’s 11.11 Global Shopping Festival include:

  • 78 brands grew to surpass RMB100 mil in GMV this year, up from RMB10 mil in GMV last year, while 698 brands grew to surpass RMB10 mil this year from RMB1 mil in GMV last year;
  • More than 45% of consumers that made purchases were born in the 1990s and 2000s. Consumers born in the 2000s increased by 25% year-over-year (yoy);
  • Tmall exhibited 500,000 goods with official Green Product Certification from over 2,000 merchants in an eco-friendly vertical;
  • During the Global Shopping Festival, nearly 1,600 companies took part in Tmall’s new membership challenge campaign, attracting over 97 million new members;
  • Over 29,000 international brands participated in Tmall Global this year, offering over 1.3 million new products, with over 2,800 overseas businesses participating for the first time;
  • From Nov 1-10, 90 emerging brands remained as the top brand by GMV in their respective small categories for three consecutive years. 275 emerging brands saw their GMV doubled yoy for three consecutive years; and
  • From Nov 1-10, around 350 Xiaomanlv autonomous cars delivered over one million goods, exceeding the number of packages delivered by Xiaomanlv vehicles from September 2020 to September 2021. – Nov 13, 2021
