Stern action awaits illegal flash mob participants, IGP says

THE Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) warned the public to not join any nationwide gatherings or flash mob to protest against the rising cost of living, which is being planned by several quarters.

“I urge the public to not join any gatherings or flash mobs which doesn’t comply with Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“Stern action will be taken against the organisers and participants who fail to comply with the laws of the land,” said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani in a statement.

With inflation hitting high and prices of good soaring, several political movements and non-governmental organisation (NGO) have called upon the public to hold flash mobs across the country as a protest against the Government for apparently handling the situation poorly.

On July 8, Bukit Batu state assemblyman Arthur Chiong even joined a flash mob organised at Simpang Jalan Kelapa Sawit, Johor.

“The flash mob was also participated by Semambu state assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung. Many are worried that prices of essential items will spike again if the Government fails to act decisively,” he was reported as saying.

On that note, Acryl Sani said the police would continue to monitor the situation to ensure there are no threats to national security.

“And we hope the public will cooperate by not participating in any events that may jeopardise public order,” he remarked. – July 16, 2022
