Stray arrow lodged in car sparks safety concerns at undisclosed archery range

THERE are many ways to die in this world and death by a stray bullet or arrow is but one of the many, but highly unlikely possibilities.

But when we live nearby or walk around a gun or archery range, it is obvious that the probability should rise by a notch or two.

Take it from this recent video where an arrow could be seen sticking out of a car parked beside an archery range. According to netizen @kamaghul who posted the video, the location was at Setiawangsa.

Now imagine if it were to hit a passerby, what would happen? We expect an archery range to have the necessary protective measures in place to close off the target area so no arrows would find their way into an innocent human.

But no. The video revealed the condition of the range, which was being closed off by nothing but wire mesh. Talk about safety and responsibility.

This archery range is waiting to become another scene in the Final Destination series. But how far can an arrow go before it becomes non-lethal? According to the website hunter-ed, modern bows can shoot arrows up to 400 yards at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour.

However, the bow is a short-range hunting tool, and depending on circumstances, the maximum distance is 30 to 40 yards.

“At that range, it is common for an arrow to pass completely through an animal,” said hunter-ed.

Although the length and breadth of the field at the archery range was not being mentioned, a quick look tells us that it is not even close to covering the 30 to 40 yards that allows the arrow to lose its killing velocity.

Perhaps some protective cover could be placed over the wire mesh fence to ensure any stray arrows do not find their way into someone’s eye or groin. —Aug 19, 2025
