Study: Majority M’sians feel Ukraine war not Malaysia’s business, should not get involved

A PREVAILING sentiment among a majority of Malaysians is that the Ukraine war is not Malaysia’s business and that Malaysia should avoid getting involved.

This is according to a recent Ipsos study that revealed that this sentiment also extends to financial support – with the country’s economy still recovering from the COVID-19 crisis a large majority of Malaysians feel that financial support to Ukraine should not be a priority.

The study by the insights and analytics company titled “The War in Ukraine” further found that in most major countries around the world – including non-European countries – a majority of the population is paying close attention to the events in Ukraine.

This is in contrast to Malaysia where fewer Malaysians follow stories about the war compared to peers in other Asian countries like Japan, India and South Korea.

“After two years of almost non-stop focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, much of international media coverage has shifted to the evolving war in Ukraine for the past two months.

“Although the war is confined to Europe the impact is felt far beyond with increased volatility in energy markets and an emerging food crisis,” commented Ipsos Malaysia Public Affairs associate director Lars Erik Lie.

“Despite the global implications, proximity to the war will have an impact of how much attention is paid, and in Malaysia, a minority say they are following stories about the war closely.

“This is significantly lower than the other countries surveyed, including major Asian countries such as Japan, India and South Korea.” – April 27, 2022
