Sultan Nazrin voices concern over rising disrespect towards the monarchy

IN a recent speech at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Pledge of Loyalty and Investiture Ceremony, Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah expressed concern over rising disrespect toward the monarchy and a growing disregard for tradition and cultural values in Malaysia.

He emphasised the monarchy’s role in balancing tradition with modernity and called for citizens to reject cultural erosion and maintain respect for heritage, as these values are foundational to Malaysia’s unity and progress.

Sultan Nazrin emphasised that the ruler’s role extends beyond constitutional duties, serving to connect tradition with modernity and sustain the nation’s historical and cultural legacy.

This legacy, built on respectful cultural practices, refined character, and linguistic beauty, forms the basis for creating a disciplined and progressive nation.

“This role is exceedingly relevant and grows more so as our society faces various forms of cultural subversion and sabotage.

“Recently, we have witnessed a troubling trend: the rejection of decorum and disregard for tradition, often led by those ignorant of their country’s history, shallow in their understanding of their own civilisation, and influenced by a displaced cultural mindset.

“This detached, rootless perspective leads them to violate values and abandon tradition,” said Sultan Nazrin.

Moreover, he also warned of the dangers posed by using religion and ethnicity in political rhetoric, which he likened to sparks that could ignite divisive tensions.

He called for wise leadership that celebrates diversity and provides equitable protection for all citizens.

The monarch, he noted, stands as a protector of Malay culture and Islam while supporting all citizens in building a peaceful, prosperous, and united Malaysia. – Nov 9, 2024
