PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei is in stable condition and currently recuperating at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
Speaking to reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the ASEAN Auditors’ Conference 2025 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Anwar shared that the Sultan was well, though still in need of rest.
“I’ll release an official statement soon, but for now, let His Majesty rest. He’s doing fine, Alhamdulillah, just a little tired,” Anwar said.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office later confirmed that while His Majesty’s condition remains stable, close medical supervision is still necessary.
It also mentioned that the Sultan is being accompanied by Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha throughout his recovery.
“In line with medical advice, His Majesty will not be receiving visitors for the time being, with the exception of close members of the Brunei Royal Family, to ensure a smooth healing process,” the statement noted.
The prime minister also called on Malaysians to keep the Sultan in their prayers, hoping for his swift recovery and continued well-being under Allah’s grace.
According to earlier news reports, the Sultan, 78, was admitted to the IJN in Kuala Lumpur following fatigue during a regional summit.
His office, as quoted by Reuters, assured the public that His Majesty’s health was not a cause for concern and that he would remain under observation for several days as advised by medical professionals.
His absence at the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council-China Summit on the previous day sparked questions among journalists covering the event, particularly since Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has led Brunei since 1967.
The news of his hospitalisation was subsequently confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar during a press conference at the 46th ASEAN Summit.
Additionally, a social media post from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, noted the Sultan’s absence from the Royal Banquet hosted at Istana Negara that same evening. —May 28, 2025
