Taman Sri Muda flooded again, delayed water outflow to blame

TAMAN Sri Muda, one of the worst-hit areas during last year’s floods, was flooded once more after heavy rain yesterday (Aug 20) evening.

Taman Sri Muda Zone D residents association treasurer Anbarasan Many told Free Malaysia Today (FMT) that the floods started around 4pm yesterday, with water entering some houses in his Shah Alam suburb.

He added that the tidal gate to release water accumulated in the drainage system around the area was only opened around 5:30pm – well after the floods began.

Bernama reported Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari as saying the sluice gates were opened to speed up the receding water (but did not mention what time) and that the state Government was monitoring the situation closely.

Bernama also quoted Selangor state infrastructure and public amenities, agriculture modernisation and agro-based industry committee chairman Izham Hashim as saying the flash floods took place as a result of the high water level in Sungai Rasau, as well as the situation of stagnant water which delayed the flow of water out to Sungai Rasau.

Izham said he had instructed the Drainage and Irrigation Department to activate the pump system immediately, and urged residents to immediately report if there were any untoward incidents on the ground.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said the floodwater completely subsided in Taman Sri Muda by 6:30pm and that the heavy rain had stopped by this time, Malaysiakini reported.

As of last night, no evacuations were conducted and the situation at Taman Sri Muda was under control.

“The department asks for the cooperation of residents in the area to comply with safety instructions from the authorities if any flooding incident occurs in Taman Sri Muda.

“Residents around Taman Sri Muda are urged not to panic or be influenced by viral posts on social media,” he added.

Bomba had earlier mobilised five rescue boats, one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicle, one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, along with 24 firefighters and three senior officers to the scene.

Last December, disaster struck Taman Sri Muda in the form of the December 2021 floods, which saw 14,000 people in Selangor displaced.

At least 25 casualties were reported in the state, most of which took place in Taman Sri Muda.

Fifty residents have since filed a suit against the federal and state Governments, as well as a number of ministers and Government agencies, for alleged negligence over last December’s floods. – Aug 21, 2022
