Targeted repayment assistance for flood victims

FLOODS in Malaysia are regular natural disasters in Malaysia which happen nearly every year and is one of the most devastating natural disaster experienced in the country. This annual affair usually happens between December and January in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Floods cause extensive damages to crops, domestic animals, property and even human life. In 1971, the whole of Peninsular Malaysia was hit with massive flood which resulted in a loss of more than RM250 mil and 61 deaths.

Three decades later, the December 2014 to January 2015 flood – described as one of the worst in the last decade – recorded economic losses about RM1.14 bil.

Besides the mentioned damages, flood victims loss their income and assets (house and car). Last year has already been a difficult year for many – financially – with the series of movement control orders (MCOs) which have caused a strain on the economy and livelihood of the rakyat.

To help flood victims cope with financial burdens, the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) is offering targeted repayment assistance for its Debt Management Programme (DMP) customers who have been affected by the recent floods in several states.

“This offering is made to help alleviate its customers’ financial burden,” said AKPK in a statement.

To recap, DMP is a personalised debt repayment plan for individual customers developed in consultation and agreement with Financial Institutions (FIs) involved. Through this programme, AKPK’s counsellors will work with its customers to develop a personalised debt repayment plan in consultation with respective financial service providers.

“The repayment assistance includes postponement of, or lower monthly DMP instalments, subject to customer requests and AKPK’s assessment,” AKPK added.

Flood affected AKPK customers may apply for the repayment assistance online at:

Guidance for enrolment into the DMP programme via AKPK’s customer programme are as below:

“Please be informed that all of these services are free and AKPK has never appointed any agents or third-party representatives to act on its behalf,” AKPK cautioned the public. – Jan 13, 2021
