Teraju seeks new ground for Bumiputera entrepreneurs

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Bumiputera Economic Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju) says it is identifying opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs in new economic sectors, especially those with high impact, high value and high effect.

CEO Md Silmi Abd Rahman said since Teraju’s establishment in 2011, Bumiputera entrepreneurs have been mainly involved in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and services.

“For the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), we will focus on new sectors such as biomedical, biotechnology, aerospace, smart farming and digital industry.

“We want to go into these new sectors because we want to give new space to our youths who are already involved, or have been so identified, in these sectors,” he told reporters after meeting the Johor exco for enterpreneur development, cooperatives, science and technology Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali here today.

Since Teraju’s establishment, the cumulative value created for the Bumiputera agenda through its initiatives and programme stands at RM145.3 bil, with new sectors contributing less than 5%, said Md Silmi.

“We target a contribution of 20%-30% from new sectors over the next five years under 12MP,” he added.

Teraju, under the Economic Affairs Ministry, also sees collaboration potential with the country’s research universities for community-based projects aimed at promoting the commercialisation of their research outputs as well as helping to raise the living standards of the B40 (bottom of the income level) group. – Feb 17, 2020, Bernama
