Thailand military enrollment goes viral for similarity to Harry Potter sorting cap

ANGUISH and pride are two emotions experienced by any coming of age teenager in a country that required mandatory participation in the army. Mostly it is just anguish actually.

Interestingly, Thailand decided to add a little drama to their military selection programme by making it look like a sorting cap event in a Harry Potter movie.

In a viral video on X, netizen @OnlyBangersEth claimed Thai nationals at the age of 21 must participate in a military draft lottery.

If the person draws a red card, he is required to serve in the military for two years, while the black exempts him from serving.

The brief video shows a heartwarming ending where the boy jumped out of joy for drawing the black card, only to fall down.

Netizen @OnlyBangersEth said the guy was probably trying to disable himself just in case it was going to be a red card.

But here comes the most important question of them all. @IvanOrtizzz asked Grok, the artificial intelligence for X if a “lady-boy” was required to attend the military draft lottery.

To this, Grok gave a comprehensive reply:

Perhaps the winning comment goes to @_J_R_O_B_ who said, “Red u go to the military. Black u become ladyboy.”

However, some netizens think the military was not something to be frowned upon.

@MadMadViking said two years of compulsory non-combat military training is a good thing. “If we implemented this, crime would go down markedly,” he said.

“The irony is the ones that get to go are generally the happiest cause they could provide for their families, foreign concept for Americans,” claims @JraDproductions.

Then there was @yamaheru who suggested Thailand make it one year of service instead and make everyone serve.

On our part, we think it is a real shame for people to be so delighted at not being chosen to serve their country.

After all the benefits we have gained under this huge roof which is our motherland, the least we could do is to take up arms to defend her against a foreign threat.

But to each his own. Regardless, the sorting has indeed become a hilarious spectacle, not just for the Thais, but for the online world. —Apr 9, 2025
