The evolution of the iconic Kriss –Malaysia’s first national motorbike

NOT many Malaysians are aware that the country has its own national motorcycle for it would probably be in the shadow of Japanese household names in the likes of Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki, to name a few brands.

As a refresher, Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (MODENAS) rolled out Malaysia’s first national motorcycle – the Kriss 110 – which is a moped model in November 1996.

MODENAS which is known for its scooters and mopeds has to-date produced 50 different types of motorcycle models besides having added ‘naked bike and sports tourer’ into its production portfolio.

Almost 25 years down the road, the national motorbike company has rekindled old memories by introducing the Disc Brake variant of its best-selling Kriss 110.

This is the latest iteration of the iconic Kriss 110 comes with a number of upgrades to the model launched in September 2019, including enhanced safety features and style updates.

The Kriss 110 Disc Brake comes with front twin-piston disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

The variant is designed with twin shock absorbers and rides on a pair of tubeless tyres fitted with stylish sports rims, complementing the grey titanium engine and muffler cover paint giving an extra stylish edge to the bike.

Weighing at only 97kg, the four-stroke, single overhead camshaft (SOHC), single-cylinder, carburettor-powered motorcycle remains air-cooled but packs a maximum power of 4.9kW and 6.7 NM of torque.

Priced at RM3,877 (before insurance and road tax), the Kriss 110 Disc Brake variant offers premium styling and a number of features that are not usually available in its class.

MODENAS’ CEO Roslan Roskan is hopeful that this so-called Ikon Rakyat will once again become a staple in every Malaysian household like its predecessor.

“The added features that comes with it makes the Kriss 110 Disc Brake variant one of the best choices for first-time motorcycle buyers seeking a reliable and easy-to-handle machine,” he enthused.

“It comes with a two-year warranty or 20,000km whichever is earlier, is EEV-certified and is fully compliant with Euro 3 emission standards.”

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, although Roslan is adamant that with the Kriss 110 Disc Brake variant’s pricing and all its safety and style upgrades, “we have a winner in our hands.” – Dec 17, 2020
