MALAYSIANS Against Death Penalty and Torture (MADPET) has urged the government to act swiftly to save Pannir Selvam from execution in Singapore.
Despite a temporary stay, MADPET warns execution could follow soon. They highlighted past failed efforts and urge stronger intervention, citing the Philippines’ success in saving Mary Jane Veloso.
MADPET also calls for reforming drug laws and a global moratorium on executions.
Nevertheless, a criminal lawyer’s account on X recently posted a statement containing racial remarks. The lawyer revealed that a “Datuk” was approached during efforts to save Pannir Selvam, who was granted a temporary stay in February 2025.
However, a leaked screenshot of an alleged text from a contact expressed disdain toward Pannir’s race.
🇲🇾 can go to hell. Just trying to request for ties to the Home Ministry for Pannir and got this message. When a Malaysian man is about to be executed in a foreign land, this is the thinking.
Just to clarify this is not an official response from any govt-affiliated person https://t.co/r4D0RA8pwe pic.twitter.com/xMFjIWXWrs

The concern is whether such racial disdain could influence the execution of our nationals in Singapore.
This question arises despite the user clarifying that the individual contacted is neither from the Ministry nor connected to the government or the case in Singapore.
Relax bang. Nanti try barang dengan pusher lain. Chill ok. Mek faham kalau x dapat barang ni kita cepat meroyan.

Furthermore, there are arguments regarding the situation, as some users add that Pannir was charged due to bringing in drugs into Singapore.
Meanwhile, others made crude statements about Singapore.
Singapore is an embarrassment. 2025 and still thinking they have justice.
But it seems some Malaysians are trying to win the embarrassment race.

Others went on gossiping about the situation, with some claiming he is, in fact innocent. Regardless, this issue has raised the concerns of the death penalty for foreigners in a foreign country. — Feb 22, 2025
