KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has granted special exemption to Port Klang, Penang Port and Johor Port to transfer non-essential goods to warehouses outside the port area temporarily so they can continue to release essential goods promptly.
In a statement today, minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the ports will develop and implement action plans to alleviate the congestion of goods in their respective warehouses within the port areas by expediting the movement of goods.
“Currently, Port Klang, Port of Penang, and Johor Port in Pasir Gudang have reached nearly 100% of their capacity to hold goods, and these goods must be moved out of the warehouses and delivered to their final destinations as soon as possible,” he said.
The minister noted that it was important to clear the congestion currently experienced at these ports so that the movement of essential goods are not impeded during the movement control order (MCO) period.
Wee said freight forwarders and haulier companies will be allowed to move their goods out around the clock between March 27 and 29.
To ensure smooth transit and delivery of all goods, both essential and non-essential, he said police personnel will ensure that the freight forwarders and hauliers’ vehicles are allowed to move during this period to send the goods to their intended destinations.
“The freight forwarders and hauliers must adhere to conditions stipulated by the National Security Council on March 18.
“All export activities will be allowed to continue, as it is vital to ensure that supply chains are not severed and countries that need our exports will be able to continue receiving them,” he added.
The transportation sector had been identified as one of the essential services during the MCO period. – March 26, 2020, Bernama
