VOTING for the Tioman state seat in Pahang today has been postponed to Dec 7 following the sudden death of one of its candidates.
Announcing this, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman said early voting would be on Dec 3 and nominations on Nov 24, meaning there will be 13 days of campaigning.
Pahang EC director Datuk Zamree Hamli, on the other hand, said polls for Muadzam Shah, Bukit Ibam and Rompin would carry on today as scheduled.
The Rompin federal seat is made up of the Tioman, Muadzam Shah and Bukit Ibam state constituencies.
Earlier today, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Md Yunus Ramli died at Rompin Hospital, believed to be due to a heart attack. He was 61.
The former PAS Sungai Puteri division chief was to battle it out against four others from Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and an independent.
He is the second candidate to pass during the 15th General Elections (GE15), the first being Padang Serai incumbent MP and former PKR leader M. Karupaiya, who died on Wednesday (Nov 16) due to a heart attack.
Accordingly, the Padang Serai federal polls have been postponed to Dec 7, the same day as the Tioman polls.
Meanwhile, the EC said turnout for GE15 is 31% as of 11am, meaning 6.56 million registered voters have cast their ballots so far.
In contrast, there were only 5.38 million votes in at the same time during the last polls in 2018. – Nov 19, 2022
