Tiong clarifies Tourism Malaysia not responsible for alcohol served at Global Travel Meet dinner

TOURISM, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has clarified that Tourism Malaysia was not responsible for serving alcohol at a recent Gala Dinner during the Global Travel Meet.

“Tourism Malaysia did not provide food or beverages during the dinner. It was hosted by our partners from the tourism industry,” he said.

Tiong said the catering was arranged by private partners and not part of the agency’s official programme, which only involved launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 events calendar.

He noted that the event generated about RM420 mil in economic impact and urged against politicising the issue.

Responding to criticism from Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Tiong reminded all parties to focus on strengthening tourism and Malaysia’s global image.

“YB Masjid Tanah also has a responsibility to promote tourism in the country, particularly in the areas you represent,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of public-private collaboration while respecting local customs and sensitivities. —Oct 5, 2025
