KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) innovation arm, TM Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D) has successfully developed an open software development platform, known as the Open Innovation Platform (OIP).
In a statement today (Feb 12), TM said the OIP enables it to develop and deploy solutions four times faster than before, and is ready to be used as a digital development platform for developers and digital enthusiasts.
“As part of our initiative to promote the platform, we organised the OIP Smart Campus Design Challenge together with the Multimedia University (MMU).
“Thirty teams took up the challenge with 20 innovative applications built using the OIP,” TM said, adding that to-date, it has over 30 applications already built on the platform and it now contains more than 500 data sets and over 70 services to enable rapid development of apps.
TM R&D chief executive officer, Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah (above) said one of the solutions developed using the OIP is the award-winning Smart Retail Analytics — an innovation that helps businesses improve customer experience and increase sales via information on demographics, average waiting time, purchasing behaviour and customer emotion detection.
The list includes Smart Safety Helmet – a data-driven smart industrial helmet that helps to make worksites safer by providing live, wireless monitoring and array of sensors.
Both are part of TM R&D’s six smart solutions being deployed for TM’s 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) in Langkawi.
“I’m also pleased to note that the OIP has attracted tremendous collaboration interest. Among other things, the platform comprises a data brokerage system, an Application Programming Interface aggregation infrastructure and an end-to-end Internet of Things (IoT) platform for rapid service creation.
“In just one year, we already have more than 27 million API calls running on the platform, including the Gerbang Langkawi Platform at TM’s 5G Command Centre (5GCC),” she said.
The Gerbang Langkawi Platform is a multi-layer digital infrastructure that provides a complete ecosystem for the creation of new revenue opportunities.
She said TM R&D believes that the development of smarter platforms is the key to enrich the nation and achieve its goal by creating a complete eco-system for growth and prosperity.
“This can then create better insights and spawn creation of new services which will benefit the people,” said Sharlene.
TM R&D is currently running full-fledged 5G live trials under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s 5GDP in Subang Jaya, Selangor and Langkawi in Kedah.
TM is the first telco in the world to deploy 700 MHz and c Band (3500 MHz) on Standalone (SA) dedicated 5G network, and has successfully achieved 1.5Gbps for 5G speed tests conducted within its 5G use cases sites.
Under the 5GDP, TM has equipped Langkawi with 5G network, making it the first Smart Tourism Island in the world. – Feb 12, 2020, Bernama.
