Tok Mat defends Zahid, calls the latter’s detractors “uncouth”

IT is very rude for party members to call for Umno president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi to resign at this critical juncture where there are lot of uncertainties in the party and country.

“I have noticed an unhealthy trend Umno now, where some quarters are calling for Zahid to quit. Plus, a lot of unsavory remarks are made to justify the call.

“Such attitude is not part of our culture. Yes, we can voice our views but not by disrespecting the leadership institution.

“I urge Umno members to unite as such crude attitude would only create a massive rift in the party,” said its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, in a Facebook post.

In recent weeks, several grassroot Umno leaders have called Zahid to quit, following revelation that he and former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak have penned a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to back PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to replace Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

Among those who called for Zahid’s departure were Pontian Umno youth chief Mohd Helmi Buang and Seremban Umno youth chief Zool Amali Hussin.

In addition, Zahid is also facing over 40 charges on corruption, which is seen as damaging the party’s standing among voters.

Hasan, popularly known as Tok Mat, warned that any rift in Umno would only serve to benefit its rivals and they should allow personal enmity to supersede party solidarity.

“No one within Umno will benefit if the party becomes disarray. The ones who will suffer are us and the Malay community,” claimed the Rantau state assemblyman. – Jan 26, 2021.
