Trouble in Melaka: Four pulls support from CM, claims state gov’t collapsed

AFTER days of turmoil in Melaka, four assemblypersons from the state announced that they are withdrawing support from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali (UMNO).

With that, they claimed at a press conference that the state government had collapsed.

“We have already sent a letter to Sulaiman on the matter and are willing to face disciplinary action from the party,” Malaysiakini reported Sungai Udang state assemblyperson Datuk Seri Idris Haron as saying.

Idris himself was a former chief minister of the state.

Also present alongside Idris were Pantai Kundur assemblyperson Datuk Nor Azman Hassan (UMNO), Pengkalan Batu assemblyperson Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent) and Telok Mas assemblyperson Noor Effandi Ahmad (Pribumi).

In the last general election, Pakatan Harapan scored a narrow win, by securing 15 seats as opposed to Barisan Nasional’s 13 seats. That led to Parti Amanah Negara’s Adly Zahari to secure the chief minister’s post.

After Pakatan lost federal power due to Bersatu’s defection to Perikatan Nasional, two of its representatives in Melaka, with one each from PKR and DAP, joined forces with the latter which resulted in Sulaiman taking up the to job at the state.

It is to note that Norhizam was the DAP lawmaker who defected to Perikatan then.

The state Pakatan leadership is scheduled to hold a press conference on it later today. – Oct 4, 2021.
