FORMER prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is at it again, reiterating once more that Malaysia is not a multi-racial country.
“Stop talking about Malaysia [as] a multi-racial country…it is not. It is a Malay country which hosts people from other countries,” the 98-year-old veteran statesman tweeted today (July 27).
“Many countries do this. But these countries remain the land of the definitive people.”
This is, unfortunately, not the first time the former Langkawi MP had taken to social media to voice his opinion on this particular matter.
Recall that on July 3, he had claimed that promoting a multi-ethnic country goes against the Federal Constitution.
In response to Bukit Gelugor UMNO information chief Huzaidi Hussin’s calls for him to stop dividing the nation by playing with racial sentiments, Dr Mahathir had fired back by saying that he was only defending the Federal Constitution by citing its provisions.
He said instead, the Federal Constitution merely emphasises the ‘Malayness’ of Malaysia.
In response to Dr Mahathir’s claims that it was unconstitutional to promote Malaysia a multiracial Malaysia, an irate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had called the former’s claims a “desperate attempt to remain relevant”.
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook had similarly slammed Dr Mahathir for his remarks, calling them baseless while the Malaysian Bar also lambasted him for selectively interpreting the Federal Constitution.
MUDA President Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has also called for the nonagenarian to stop dividing the nation. – July 27, 2023
