Twitter user refuses to apologise for controversial death wish directed at Hadi Awang

IN a tweet yesterday (July 1) a Twitter user going by the handle @Zaki_Yamani_ expressed his desire to see that PAS leader Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang is dead. This did not go down well with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who asked the user to apologise.

The user did not delete the tweet in which he also included former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the death wish. This is despite the firm response from Anwar and the bashing he is getting online until today.

“I condemn and am disappointed with the insensitive tweet by Zaki Yamani and I direct him to apologise immediately,” Anwar posted on his official Twitter account.

Meanwhile, a local portal said Zaki is an aide to Anwar’s political secretary. The Twitter user denied being an aid to a political figure, however, saying the portal is spreading fake news instead.

According to Malaysia Now, an aide to Anwar’s political secretary has posted a “prayer” for the death of Hadi and Dr Mahathir.

Nevertheless, several personalities entered the discussion quoting Zaki in their responses to his death wishes.

Things took a turn for Zaki after he posted the following in response to a user who was debating with him on how Islam does not allow a person to wish death on others.

Demi Rakyat!@Zaki_Yamani_ “Can read WP mufti’s article. Both hadiths are used as a basis for arguments.”

His tweet got a response from the former mufti Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

The latter made reference to an article he wrote when he was the mufti of Wilayah Persekutuan.

“This article was written during my time as Mufti. It refers to a person who prays for his own death because he cannot bear the pain. Not to require prayers for your ‘political enemies’,” said Dr Zulkifli.

Dr Zulkifli added that supplication against other Muslim brothers is inappropriate.

“God reprimands those who say bad things to other people. Refer to al-Isra: 11, Yunus: 11. Imam al-Ghazali condemned the practice of praying for the bad of others (which some say include non-Muslims) in Ihya’ Ulumiddin.” – July 2, 2023
