Two food influencers battle it out over the right to make a fair review: Who wins?

WHAT happens when two food reviewers  clash in a battle royale online? Entertainment, that’s what.

Recently an unidentified influencer gained prominence for making a video criticising Jason, a food reviewer for the things he said towards a restaurant. According to him, the restaurant lost many customers due to the review.

“If you want to help them, then help them, but don’t be too honest,” he said, adding that people’s tastes are different, that it is not fair for Jason to say that something is not delicious while for others, it is.

He went on to comment that as a Malay food reviewer, his role was to help the Malay businesses out there.

If the food was bad, it was important not to mention it in a video, but to communicate it to the owner instead.

“When you make a review on Malay food, you must follow the Malay taste, not your taste,” he said in parting, suggesting that the restaurant being reviewed by Jason was owned by a Malay.

Jason has since responded to the video, saying that his review would not be relevant if the product is inherently good, regardless of the size of his social media platform.

“Me as a consumer, them as a business, our relationship, purely transactional, plain and simple. They take our hard earned money, in return they give us food, and we get to give our opinion,” Jason said.

Also, the vast number of users in the online community did not take kindly to the racist tone of the former. Others pointed to his rash behaviour as captured on a video.

Netizen arietaj further highlighted his lack of mental faculty in a simple illustration.

Another netizen sympathised with his wife who would be embarrassed with the behaviour of her husband.

“This is what happens when people who haven’t finished school become content creators,” said FeisiTang. —Feb 4, 2025
